Suite George Sand

Located on the third floor of the house, the Suite George Sand is set to restore the charm of yesteryear. With vintage tiles flooring in the bathroom, original toile fabrics, victorian tassels on draperies and 18th century furniture, this room is a faithful restoration of the period house of George Sand in the village of Nohant, in the Indre department of France. Her house was preserved because it was where Sand wrote many of her books and hosted some of the most important artists and writers of her time, including Chopin, Liszt, Balzac, Turgenev, and Delacroix.
Although George Sand is principally remembered for her contributions to literature, particularly her rustic novels, she also gained notoriety for her romantic involvement with famous men, including master of the short story Prosper Mérimée, poet and dramatist Alfred de Musset, and composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin.

The Suite George Sand features baroque wallpaper with a classic toile de Jouy motif reproduced exclusively for Maison Rose and from the Jouy-en-Josas collections.
Originally, these rural scenes were used as wall decoration in castles and mansions.
At the end of the 18th century, the German Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf founded the toile de jouy factory in Jouy-en-Josas, France, because of the presence of the Bièvre, a river with chemical qualities conducive to washing fabrics. We thus discover the techniques of printing and dyeing on cotton canvas representing characters with decorations or landscapes. These paintings are successful and appear in all the great residences and castles of the time. The designs are often monochrome, red or purple (eggplant) on an ecru or bistre background. The Manufacture Oberkampf will become the largest manufacture in Europe.
